Week Six: Aug 18 – Aug 24 Recap
There are only 69 days left until the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon! Each week is important as we get closer to race day. All of the scheduled workouts in your NYC marathon training plan are important, but the long run is sacred. As Bill Rodgers‘ former coach, Bill Squires, once said “The long run puts the tiger in the cat.”
This week, I managed to get a bit off track. I had planned to race a 10K on Thursday, but battled with flu-like symptoms Wed and Thursday instead. Nothing goes exactly according to plan. At least the end of the week worked out OK.
Sunday wrapped up with a tough 12.8 long run that called for the last two miles at Marathon race pace. Shifting gears that late in the run is a challenge. I can see how these types of “fast finish” long runs will help build my stamina. Hopefully, it will help me find another gear when I hit the 20-mile mark in November.
