RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation

Icing helps runners recover quickly and treats minor injuries before they become big problems. Almost every running injury is treated the same way: RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation). HYPERICE addresses the I and C components with cold compression therapy.

Inflammation occurs when excess blood and fluid build up around the injury. Cold compression therapy restricts blood vessels in the area and reduces inflammation which leads to faster healing and less pain. The unique design of HYPERICE allows for ice to melt while still providing maximum compression with the aid of a unique air-release valve.

HYPERICE Ice Compression Sleeve

I use the HYPERICE compression sleeve designed especially for the knee. As a masters distance runner, icing my knees after long runs and track workouts is a regular part of my injury-prevention and recovery routine. The HYPERICE sleeve is both comfortable and secure around my knee.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Fill the ice cell 2/3 with crushed ice (cubes work but may cause some discomfort)
  2. Insert the ice cell into the compression sleeve
  3. Wrap the sleeve on the body
  4. Use the valve to release any excess air, retighten to desired level of compression
  5. Press the air valve once every 5 minutes to release air and maintain optimal compression

The HYPERICE sleeve is adjustable and easy to secure with 3 velcro tabs. I’m 6′ 4″ and my wife is 5′ 3″ tall. We both use the HYPERICE sleeve, and it’s a great fit for each of us.
