Nimbus is defined as a luminous cloud or the halo that surrounds a supernatural being. A fitting name for a running shoe that undeniably offers one of the cushiest rides you’ll ever find. The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 17 wraps your feet in pillowy-soft comfort and helps you run like a superhero.
I thought the luxury model of the ASICS line-up was the Gel Kayano 21 until I tried this shoe. What ASICS has done here is pretty remarkable. They have maintained the traditional geometry and design of a normal running shoe while offering the cushioning of a trendy new ‘maximal’ shoe.

ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 Construction
The FiudFit® upper is seamless and covered in printed details and overlays. The result is a rad looking shoe with no seams. The tongue is plush as is the cushioning around the heel.
An external heel cup provides security and fit. The heel also has high-visibility reflective material that will light up the night when illuminated by vehicle headlights.
The cushioning is everywhere. It begins with a comfortable foam insole that lies on top of another layer of foam. Under that we find the FluidRide® midsole, then a layer of rearfoot and forefoot GEL® Cushioning, then more foam before reaching the rubber outsole.
It’s a plush ride reminiscent of the boat-like Ford LTD in which I spent many of my childhood years. ASICS managed this level of cushioning while only weighing in at 10.3 ounces. Not bad.
The outsole is made using durable runner tread and features a segmented pad under the heel for increased cushioning and flexibility. There is a prominent Guidance Line® to help improve gait efficiency, and the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 17 also uses the Trusstic System® to offer midfoot stability.
ASICS Gel-Nimbus 17 Road Test
I wore the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 17 for a few weeks before writing this review. I took them out for long runs, trail runs, speed workouts and even wore them to work one day. These shoes will pamper your feet and eat up the miles.
They are not fast. These shoes are too soft for the type of running that requires reaction and rebound. The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 17 is a great long run and recovery shoe. If you are training for a half marathon or marathon, this shoe will help you endure those long weekend runs.
Or, maybe you just want to run in comfort- period. Not everyone is crazy enough to torment themselves with lung-busting 400m repeats or dizzying hill workouts.
I took them on the trails and they held up well. They’re not trail shoes, but it speaks to their durability. Unfortunately, they left a layer of mud and dirt on my new shoes, but it’s a badge of honor.
The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 17 felt best on my long weekend runs. I enjoyed the sunshine and the sounds of spring and my feet were comfortable the entire way. Some runners have mentioned a slightly smaller toe box on this version of the Gel-Nimbus, but I didn’t have any discomfort or blisters.

ASICS Running Shoes for Kids
My 11-year-old son, Peyton is running a half marathon this fall. So, I wanted to find some quality running shoes for him to wear. It’s not easy finding quality running shoes in a size 4. Some brands don’t make running shoes for children, and some brands make them, but they’re not the same quality as the adult version.
So, I was psyched when I found ASICS makes quality running shoes for kids. You can find them on Amazon. Peyton has enjoyed working his way up to 7 miles wearing the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 17.
