ASICS Gel Hyper Speed 6

This shoe is made for one thing: running fast. It’s not going to pamper your feet over the long miles, it’s going to slap you across the face and tell you to pick it up, now! If training is considered the main course of running, then the ASICS Gel Hyper Speed 6 is dessert. The choice of Team ASICS elite runners, this is what you wear when it’s time to show the world you mean business.

ASICS Gel Hyper Speed 6 Construction

Let’s start with the overall weight and appearance. At 5.7 oz, the shoe is extremely light. You’ll feel like you’re wearing a pair of socks. The breathable upper is all business with welded flat seams and very little stitching. The bright colors add pop to the shoe and make it hard to miss.

The sole of the shoe vented at the midsole and outsole for increased ventilation. There is actually a small window in the middle of the outsole. The ASICS Gel Hyper Speed 6  has a rearfoot gel insert to help absorb the shock of heel strikes and a firm heel counter. The forefoot is minimal and extremely flexible.

ASICS Gel Hyper Speed 6 Road Test

I took my new shoes out for a test drive last week. I wanted to push them hard and see if they would give me any advantage, so I wore them for a 10-mile run with two 6:00 miles thrown in at mile 4 and mile 6.

I breezed through the first 3 miles trying to reign in my speed. The meat of the workout was tough as expected, but I hit my pace goals (5:58 and 5:54) and felt fast. However, the last 4 miles were tougher than expected.

The ASICS Gel Hyper Speed 6 has a low profile that really hits the lower calf muscles if you’re used to running in a shoe with a bigger heel-to-toe drop. I underestimated the effect it would have over 10 miles on tired legs. But, this speaks to my fitness and habits, more than it does the shoe design.

I also noticed the lack of cushion in the forefoot. Once again, this is a racing flat, not a trainer. I’m not ready to tackle anything over 10K distance in these flats without some time to adjust. But, I can’t wait to rip it up at my next 5K race.

If you want to add a bit of flair to your kit and race like an elite, try out the ASICS Gel Hyper Speed 6. At $85, it’s not a huge investment. And, if you shop around, you can find it for even less.

  1. I’ve had my Hyperspeed 6s for about a month and I’ve taken about 30s of of my 5k 😉 and done a 15 mile long run in them partly on trails. They are amazing shoes, felt a little unstable at first, but soon built confidence and started to fly. They’ve also made me transition into something more minimal for my regular trainer (Saucony Kinvara) 4mm drop and I’m loving it… Feeling better and running faster.

Great review of a great shoe.

  2. would really like to try the Hyperspeed as a replacement for my 5k-10k race shoe for next year. unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find my size. In most I wear a 15. Some 14. Only measure just short of 12 in., and between 13 & 14 on the shoe store device. What gives?

    1. I saw a size 14 Gel Hyper Speed available on the ASICS website. I’m a size 13, and sometimes I have trouble finding shoes too. For some reason, it’s usually the racing flats that are missing the larger sizes. Big guys can run fast too!

Thoughts?
