Children’s Museum of NH 5K 2016

The Seacoast Road Race Series is officially underway! Over 500 runners took to the streets of downtown of Dover to run the Children’s Museum of NH 5K road race. It was a beautiful day for racing and a great way to kick off the 2016 season.

What a race! The weather was beautiful, the supporters and race volunteers were awesome, and the course kept everyone honest from start to finish. I really enjoyed this one. These guys know how to put on a fun, competitive, family friendly road racing event.

Parking was easy. The four of us arrived around 8am and followed the signs to a nearby parking lot. We picked up our numbers at the clamshell in the park less than 5 minutes later. On the way back to the car we used the indoor bathrooms at the Children’s Museum of NH. Easy peasy.

Before the start, many runners ran laps around Henry Law Park while others did some group exercises led by a fitness instructor. Music was pumping and the mood was festive. After lining up, runners were treated to a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by a local student from St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

The race starts with a slight uphill into town before hitting a more challenging hill in mile two. What you run up, you must run down. Runners barreled down the hill back into town during mile three and finished with an exciting loop around the park in full view of the spectators. The last 100 yards provided a straight shot at the line and inspired many to unleash a savage kick to the finish.

Afterwards, runners could enjoy food and refreshments catered by some of the local restaurants and sponsors. There was just about everything one could ask for available under the tents in the park. I had a bagel, water, coffee, pizza, egg salad sandwich, and a bite of danish. I’m pretty sure I replaced any calories I might have burned off during the race.

There were kids running fun runs in the grass, kids enjoying refreshments, and kid-friendly activities everywhere you looked. This is the Children’s Museum of NH after all… Speaking of children, there were some very fast children in the 5K race. Three of them finished in the top 34 overall!

The awards ceremony was quick and efficient with prizes going three deep in each age division. Winners walked away with lobster dinners and others brought home gift certificates to local stores and restaurants. All in all, a great race. Don’t miss this one next year!
